All are welcome to celebrate the publication of
Good Money After Bad, and later listen to music by
country/blues band Devil in a Woodpile (no cover).

Dave's cigar shop is a great place to hang out, smoke, watch a
little of the NBA all-star weekend, and play darts, all of which
we plan to do Friday night. It's mostly guys but women are encouraged,
as well, and in fact several are threatening to do just that. There'll
be some food there, too, and Dave is going to raffle off some nice
cognac cigars to book buyers.

Having graduated from Downers Grove South ('83), this is a homecoming,
of sorts, though I'm in Downers Grove a lot to see friends and family.
My mom used to work at DG National, just down the block from Anderson's,
and my first short-lived job was at a place next to the bakery called,
if I remember correctly, People Eaters. Tribeca is a new, and, I think,
important addition to the strip.

The Woodstock town square was, of course, the setting for Groundshog Day;
it's almost as pretty in person. After the reading, I'll be at The Gambler
(1232 N. Green Street, McHenry 60050) for at least a few pints of Guinness.

This is a great little independent store in a good little downtown,
and it's also the closest reading venue to my old Lombard newspaper office.

I wanted to read here just as an excuse to do some book shopping.
The North Shore is a beehive of literary intrigue, including the
headquarters of StoryQuarterly, which was the first big journal
to publish one of my stories.

Adam is a fellow Syracuse University graduate, and he might line up
other literary Orangemen for the event.

Paul Griner asked me to talk to his students, so I'll see how
many I can scare into other professions.

The Cubs-White Sox play at Tucson Electric Park (1:05 pm start), which gives
me time for dinner before heading to the bookstore. I'm hoping to drag a few
baseball fans with me.

The Padres visit Ho Ho Kam to play the Cubs at 1:05 pm,
and after the game I'll be at my Uncle Rick's hot dog stand,
eating some world-class greasy food and signing books. Food
and books are going to be raffled off throughout the evening.

When I wrote Good Money After Bad,,I was determined
to depict an honest world with the kinds of heartbreaks and moral
confusion and tragedy not so neatly summed up in a broken kneecap.
In this writing workshop, I'll attempt to teach ways invent a fictional
world that arises from intimate knowledge rather than TV myths.

Scott and Polly Larsen run a first-class art gallery in an idyllic
location. We'll start at Scottsdale Stadium for the Cubs-Giants (1:05 pm MST)
before getting ready for the reception. This is a sophisticated place
but then again Jay Raemont and a bunch of McHenry ex-pats will be there,
so we'll see.
